Build a Plant-Powered Bowl
Build a nutritious plant-forward bowl
Pick one from each row and dinner assembles itself — which means you can cook from whatever's actually in the kitchen instead of shopping for a specific meal. Let kids choose their own combination and they'll eat more of it.
The formula
1. Start with a base
Brown rice · quinoa · whole-grain pasta · couscous · baked potato · tortilla · greens
2. Add a protein
Black beans · chickpeas · lentils · crispy tofu · edamame · kidney beans
3. Pile on vegetables
Roasted broccoli or sweet potato · cherry tomatoes · cucumber · peppers · corn · shredded carrot · frozen mixed veg
4. Finish with a sauce
Salsa · hummus thinned with water · peanut sauce · lemon and olive oil · soy-ginger · guacamole
5. Add a little crunch (optional)
Roasted chickpeas · sunflower seeds · chia · crushed tortilla chips · nutritional yeast
Four combinations to try
Taco bowl. Rice + black beans + corn and peppers + salsa + crushed tortilla chips.
Mediterranean bowl. Couscous + chickpeas + cucumber and tomato + lemon-olive oil + sunflower seeds.
Crispy tofu bowl. Brown rice + baked tofu + frozen stir-fry veg + soy-ginger sauce.
Loaded potato. Baked sweet potato + black beans + corn + guacamole.
Let them build their own
Set the components out in separate bowls and let everyone assemble their own. Choosing what goes in gives kids a real sense of control at the table, and a child who built the bowl is far more likely to eat it. It also quietly solves the picky-eater problem; everyone takes what they like from the same spread, with no separate meal to cook.
The batch-cook shortcut: make a pot of grains and a pot of beans at the start of the week, and roast a tray of vegetables. With those three in the fridge, a bowl comes together in about five minutes on a weeknight.
Keep a safe harbor: always include at least one component you know your child reliably eats. They get a guaranteed something on the plate, and you don't end up cooking a second dinner.
